COVID-19 & the Increase of Domestic Abuse
The detrimental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been felt by communities not only nationwide, but across the world. While self-isolation protocols may vary across the country, women and children experiencing domestic abuse are in greater danger due to sharing living space with their abuser. As the number and severity of domestic abuse cases has risen over the course of the pandemic, it is critical that those affected by abuse have community support. This is abundantly clear when connection and communication with support systems outside of the home is not possible.
Women's Place of South Niagara Inc.
“To stop abuse and violence against women and children by providing safety through shelter, counselling, education, advocacy and community partnerships.” While not an easy feat, this is the mission of Women’s Place of South Niagara Inc. who provides support services to women and children suffering from abuse in their community.
Women’s Place operates two shelters, Nova House (Niagara Falls) and Serenity Place (Welland) that provide emergency shelter 24/7, 365 days of the year for women and children affected by abuse. Both shelters provide support & crisis lines, as well as numerous intervention services for women and children. Due to regional COVID-19 restrictions, Women’s Place recognized the need to offer its services in virtual formats and has pivoted to offer many of them online. Counselling, safety planning, legal and transitional housing support can now be accessed remotely through Women’s Place.
Supporting Those Supporting Our Communities
C6 understands the importance of providing support services to women and children suffering from domestic abuse, especially during these difficult times. As Women’s Place continues to provide services and support to those in need throughout the pandemic, access to sanitization items such as hand sanitizers and alcohol swabs remain crucial to protect the health & safety of their guests. C6 is proud to donate a supply of these essential items to Women’s Place to help support those supporting our communities.
“The donation from C6 was not only thoughtful and kind but is a necessity for our operations. The hand sanitizer and alcohol swabs that were donated to our shelters will further help protect women and children in our shelters. A heartfelt thank you to everyone at C6 for all their hard work in producing products that help protect and keep people in our community safe.” - Amanda Braet, Development Director
