How Catheters are Measured
Catheters are a tool used to manage urinary incontinence. Like most incontinence products, size and fit are very important. Catheters have two required measurements; diameter and length. To determine what size you need, please speak to your healthcare professional.
Diameter
The diameter of a catheter tube is measured in French scale (FR). 1 FR is equal to 0.33mm. Catheters are often available in a wide range of FR sizes. Your healthcare professional can help you determine what size is best for you.
FR sizes do not apply to external catheters. External catheters, also known as condom catheters, are measured in millimetres (mm).
Length
Catheter lengths are typically measured in inches. The required length differ by gender. Men usually need a longer length, as the male urethra is longer. However, length may also differ based on a person's physique and their specific lifestyle needs. Your healthcare professional can help you determine what length you require.
